Perhaps the most famous and influential of all silent films, Fritz Lang’s sci fi masterpiece METROPOLIS caused quite a stir when it was first shown in American theatres. People were outraged by its bleak portrayal of progress run amuck, but intrigued by the breathtaking Expressionist sets and powerful, yet chilling images of a conformist society. Since its 1927 premiere, Metropolis had been seen only in edited editions. This brand new 2010 digitally remastered restoration is visually dazzling, with 25 minutes of restored footage found in Argentina. This is now THE definitive version, using the newly recorded 1927 orchestral score, with revised translated intertitles and a 148 minute running time. The 2-DVD set contains a bonus 50 minute documentary on the restoration, gallery of photos and promotional posters, 5.1 surround sound and more.
